Age seemed to present no major obstacle to enlistment [during WWII], however: some of the men simply 'adjusted' their birthdates, and the authorities regularly failed to insist on documentary proof. [...] Abraham Bowson, who had been wounded at Hazebrouck in 1918, 'adjusted' his birthdate for this enlistment (from 1884) to 1900.
